1959 Plymouth Sport Fury for sale in Charlotte, North Carolina

$49,900

Virtually everyone knows Plymouth as one of Detroit's legendary muscle car divisions. And while it eventually spawned some of America's premier stoplight warriors, the brand itself started as Chrysler's entry level marque to rival Ford and Chevrolet in both sales and popularity. That means many of the storied muscle cars enthusiasts know and love began as plush people movers like this stylish 1959 Sport Fury. Wrapping an original polysphere V8 and a pushbutton transmission in a tailored interior and a ton of stylish sheetmetal, this all-American cruiser HAS to be one of the coolest Plymouths on the planet! For fans of unique cars, it doesn't get much better than an Exner era Plymouth. And if you're a Mopar collector who's itching for some classic big fin metal that'll be the star of every cruise night in town, this '59 Fury is your ticket!
Based on legendary designer Virgil Exner's 'Forward Look' body, the first generation Plymouth Sport Fury was the Mayflower marque's top-of-the-line offering and, according to many classic car enthusiasts, is the pinnacle of 50s automotive design. Although the car was introduced to permanently slot above Plymouth's well-known Belvedere moniker, it was produced exclusively for the 1959 model year and is likely some of the rarest Detroit metal ever created. This spectacular Flame Red example was assembled at Chrysler's Evansville, Indiana manufacturing facility and currently wears a clean, high quality restoration that has been exceptionally maintained. Its long, low and wide body reflects a smooth coat of Chrysler code N urethane which exhibits minimal signs of wear and no major defects. It's re-chromed original bumpers and polished original stainless look almost as good as the day they left the showroom. And despite what some might call exaggerated proportions and excessive brightwork, the car is both striking and handsome!
By 1959 Plymouth was in the final days of its three year design cycle; and to combat radical new models from both GM and Ford, the division knew it had to either go big or go home. That creative mentality manifested itself in some of the most detailed and interesting designs ever unleashed on American streets. At the front of this Fury's sculpted body, an anodized aluminum eggcrate grille hangs a forward facing 'space age' Mayflower ship between pristine floating headlamps and clean, wraparound parking lamps. Below that grille, a clean 'jet intake' bumper fronts a bright silver valence; and above that grille, a fresh "Plymouth" script combines with broad stainless trim to frame the car's massive, rolled hood. At the sides of the body, double barrel fenders flow into newly smoothed fins behind great looking Fury-exclusive side trim and familiar gold "Fury" scripts. Below that trim, dent-free stainless rocker moldings connect swept fender openings; and above that trim correct chrome mirrors combine with traditional chrome door handles and bright Tiffany Touch quarter medallions to lend a healthy dose of both form and function. At the top of the car, a jet-inspired windshield and like-new greenhouse glass ride between a pillarless hard top and bright, original stainless. And at the back of the car, fluted fin trim centers Exner's infamous 'sport deck' trunk lid between a second "Plymouth" script, 1959-exclusive combination tail lights and a second chrome bumper.
All that classy metal moves thanks to a fully rebuilt 318 cubic inch Polysphere V8 which creates a stout 260 horsepower and wears a correct 1737929 casting number. Introduced exclusively as a Plymouth powerplant, Chrysler's solid lifter A block would eventually spread across the Corporation's entire line and become one of their most trusted and dependable Mopar mills. The copy you see here appears to wear a roster of correct pieces, from its red air cleaner and high performance 4-barrel carburetor all the way to its heavy duty radiator and red cap Mopar battery, on its way to making this awesome Plymouth one very capable cruiser. Fire is provided by a high performance points distributor which shoots sparks between a traditional generator and Hi-Temp Radio Suppression wires. Combustion comes courtesy of a high performance camshaft which breathes through a high performance intake and low restriction exhaust manifolds. Aesthetically, the engine's fresh aluminum paint contrasts well against the car's Flame Red firewall and satin black inner fenders. And little details like fresh stainless lines, fresh hood insulation, correct clamps, a vintage Autolite horn and a cool Jiffy Jet washer bag round out the engine bay with tons of eyeball appeal.
Under this big boulevard king you'll find a fully-sorted chassis which includes straight floor pans that have obviously been restored at some point and a solid driveline that's in good working condition. The transmission is a smooth-shifting A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic which sends power to a correct rear end. The robust suspension, which comes complete with factory power steering, consists of a tough torsion bar front and rigid leaf spring rear set up that provides pothole shattering solidity under a silky smooth ride. At the corners of the car, heavy duty manual drum brakes ensure solid, fade free stops. At the center of the car, a traditional true dual exhaust system employs fresh turbo mufflers which sound deep and civilized. And all this road-worthy hardware rides on old school 14 inch steel wheels which spin pliable G78-14 Remington Cushion Aire whitewalls around correct stainless hubcaps.
Take a look inside the car and you'll find a spacious and airy environment which has enough room to haul the whole family in comfort. Front swivel bucket and rear bench seats, which still feel firm to the touch, prop an attractive combination of red vinyl and Viscose metallic cloth under protective plastic covers. New black carpet, which was oddly absent from the color palette back in 1959, does an excellent job of highlighting the car's bright red mats, detailed upholstery and stainless trimmed dash. And speaking of the dash, a crack-free pad, Royalite no-glare paint and a correct Plymouth pushbutton radio frame a super cool 'jet age' driver control center which locates everything, including the car's pushbutton transmission, within reach of the driver. At the sides of the seats, fantastic tri-tone door panels display a prominent 50s design theme behind great looking stainless, fresh chrome handles and correct vinyl armrests. Above the seats, a correct Ivory hardwood headliner adds the kind of finish work that's completely absent from modern design. And behind the seats, a "Fury" branded package tray hangs over a giant, fully restored trunk which props a full-size spare tire next to an echo-prone level of cargo space. Not only will you look cool in this classic Plymouth, you'll feel cool too thanks to the car's functional Airtemp air conditioning system. Also present and accounted for is an original factory dash badge which was personalized upon delivery to the car's original owner. And unique to the Sport Fury trim was an exclusive deluxe steering wheel which is equipped with bright stainless accents, attractive Lucite inserts, and a full chrome horn ring.
This '59 Plymouth is a super cool cruiser that's easy to imagine as the focal point of a cross-country road trip. With its burly V8, tailored interior and dramatic styling, it represents the pinnacle of American styling and manufacturing dominance. If you're looking for a top-notch classic that'll draw a crowd wherever it goes, your search is over!
