For a lot of car guys, the unusual cars are the ones that hold the most appeal. Sure, there are cars that everyone thinks are cool, cars like a Boss 302 or a big block Camaro. But to guys like us here at Streetside Classics, the really interesting cars are the ones that sneak up on you and impress you with their details. This 1969 Mustang convertible is just such a car, thanks to its high quality restoration and lengthy list of options including factory A/C. This is exactly the kind of car that you don't know you want until you see it, and now here it is. Someone spent a lot of money on this car, and probably ended up way upside-down on it from a financial standpoint. But there's no arguing with the results, because this is a gorgeous car. Refinished in the original code M Wimbledon White, with a Mach 1 style hood treatment, this convertible is a cool combination of luxury and sport that is insanely appealing. The bodywork is first rate, and the more we look at the car, the more impressed we are. Gaps are excellent, and shut lines are tight, making this one of the tightest Mustang convertibles we've featured in a long time. The paint is glossy and bright, and the blacked-out hood, complete with the Mach 1 hood scoop, looks awesome against the beautiful white finish. The chrome is good all around, and all the stainless has been straightened and polished. I am especially fond of the taillights on the '69s, with their frameless design that has the lenses just kind of floating in the tail panel with a minimum of trim and brightwork. In fact, that's how you can sum up this whole car-exceptional in the details with a minimum of excess flash. The black bucket seat interior is spectacular in the same way-clean, honest, fresh, but extremely well done. Those black buckets are comfortable and firm, as is the rear bench, and that's thanks to a set of new upholstery and fresh foam underneath. The twin cockpit design of the dash is handsome and racy, and it appears that all the gauges have been fully rebuilt, now featuring crisp markings and scratch-free lenses. A center console dresses up the driver's compartment, and houses the shifter for the 3-speed automatic underneath, as well as some handy storage bins. The original AM radio still lives in the dash, feeding a pair of speakers in the door panels, and the sound is crisp and clear. Overhead, there's a new black power convertible top with the factory style folding rear window. Although it looks the part of a Mach 1, under the hood you'll find the venerable 302 cubic inch V8, which is one of Ford's better motors. Reliable, smooth, and with plenty of torque, this car will scoot, especially when topped by a 4-barrel carburetor as this one is. The engine bay is nicely finished, with Ford Blue paint on the engine, a stock chrome air cleaner with correct 302 decal, and 'Powered by Ford' valve covers as a not-so-subtle reminder of who's making the horsepower. The A/C system is original, not an aftermarket conversion, and features all-new parts throughout-in fact, it's so fresh that it hasn't even been charged yet. The same is true underneath, where you'll find a C4 automatic driving a 9-inch Ford rear end that has been properly finished with a red oxide center section. Floors are solid and all the convertible reinforcements are still in place and rust-free. A newer stock-style dual exhaust system gives the 302 just the right tone and fits as it should, snaking through the chassis the way the factory intended. Out back, there's a new gas tank, and all the fluid systems have been rebuilt with fresh lines and hoses. To complete the Mach 1 look, it uses a set of styled steel wheels wearing 235/60/15 BFGoodrich T/A radials to fill the wheel wells completely. The more we look at this car, the better it seems. This is in contrast to most cars where the harder you look, the more issues you discover. The effort poured into this convertible is worthy of a high-end big block piece or even a Shelby, not a daily driver, and as a result, the restoration is much, much nicer than it needs to be.
