Are you looking for solid Chevelle Super Sport attitude? Here at RK Motors Charlotte weve got you covered. This AACA National Award Winner 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle has SS 454 flash with nice paint, a super clean interior and a fire breathing LS5 454 V8 all in a package that is done right and doesnt cost a fortune to own.
As evidenced by its cowl tag, this 1970 Chevelle started its life as a Malibu sports coupe. Recently, this clean survivor was treated to a no-expense spared, no-holds barred rebuild into a 1971 SS 454, using the best components available. During that restoration, the body was massaged and straightened to perfection and repainted in the cars original GM code 75 Cranberry Red with added high gloss black racing stripes. The body is straight, with no waves or imperfections and could be considered as better than showroom new. The paints as flat as the bodywork and the new black SS stripes are free of defects and beautiful from every angle. The end result is stunning; and no matter how many times I see this color combination on a Chevelle, it just never gets old.
Up front, this 1971 Chevelle presents a more tidy appearance than its predecessors. A great looking chrome trimmed grille features a 2009 AACA National First Prize badge along with a prominent SS badge and rides above a thick chrome bumper that appears new. Two new Power Beam headlights are mounted in excellent looking body colored housings with integrated turn signals and show worthy chrome trim. A factory correct cowl induction hood complete with correct hood pins adds massive street presence. Behind that hood, stainless trim that is in great shape flanks new glass windows all around. Less reliant on chrome and stainless than its predecessors, the profile of this 1971 Chevelle includes new wheel well trim, stainless drip rails, optional stainless door edge guards, chrome door handles and a chrome drivers side mirror which are all in great shape. With the stainless being downplayed, the big white and red SS 454 emblems on the front fenders of the car seem all the more prominent. In the rear, a simplified chrome bumper with integrated familiar round Chevrolet tail lights looks excellent and complements a bright new Chevelle by Chevrolet emblem on the red and black trunk lid. New satin finished trim rings and bowtie center caps ride on freshly painted correct 15 inch Rallye wheels with F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GT tires. This 1971 Chevelle takes the clean and muscular look of its predecessors and refines it to an even less boisterous state for a car that looks serious and solid.
At the heart of that serious nature is an LS5 454 cubic inch V8 that was rated from the factory at 365 horsepower and 465 lb./ft. of torque. Look under the hood of this car and youll find a correct cowl induction air cleaner housing that feeds air through a 4 barrel carburetor into a correct Winter aluminum intake. Youll notice that the hood is correctly finished in satin black with insulation and a courtesy lamp and the block is Chevrolet orange just as it came from the factory. Attached to the big block is correct exhaust manifolds, correct chrome valve covers and an HEI distributor with fresh AC Delco plug wires. A reproduction AC Delco battery sits next to a correct satin black radiator which matches the satin black engine bay and AC compressor. The master cylinder and brake booster look good and rust free, and all belts and hoses look new. There arent any high-end, platinum dipped, exotic pieces in here, as the car was built to be a worry free drive.
The underside of this Chevelle is clean and solid for a car that has been on the road for 40 years and while not showroom fresh looks to be well maintained and in good shape. The rust free floor pans are covered in GM flat black paint. The A-arms, and engine cradle are in good shape with none of the typical dents that years of scraping speed bump usually provides. Its obvious from underneath the car that since the engine and M21 Muncie close ratio transmission have been installed, this car has seen very little, if any inclement weather. Mufflers and tailpipes have recently been installed and run to chrome tips that exit below the red rear valence. The driveshaft looks solid and runs to what is most likely the cars original limited slip twelve bolt rear end which appears to have a new differential cover. Correct power disc brakes up front feature new hoses and correct drum brakes out back look to be in good shape and are free of heavy rust. Functional and reliable, this is the kind of suspension that you wont be afraid to drive anywhere or tear apart in your own garage for upgrades.
The restored black vinyl interior in this Chevelle is absolutely beautiful and is certainly a highlight of the car. The buckets are firm to the touch, showing no wear and tear and the rear bench looks as if its never been disturbed. A spotless console trimmed in chrome houses a chrome Hurst shifter with a fresh boot and chrome shifter knob. The straight dash has no cracking or warping and houses the typical Chevelle speedometer, tachometer, clock, fuel gauge temperature gauge and amp gauge which are all free of haze and work wonderfully. A heater control panel sends heat or air conditioning through chrome trimmed vents in the top and bottom of the dash and an AM radio sits just above the Hurst shifter. The carpet is in excellent shape and is protected by black heavy duty floor mats. And the headliner is still stretched tight across the roof of the car. A factory correct steering wheel features chrome trim and an SS logo that matches the chrome trim and cool SS logos on the pristine door panels. The trunk has been expertly restored, with correct finishes, a new trunk mat, a new spare tire and a decal with correct instructions for the jack. This car was made for cruising and the comfortable and well restored interior ensures that you get every ounce of pleasure out of all your seat time.
