1999 Ford Saleen Mustang S281 Cobra for sale in Charlotte, North Carolina

$36,900

For a little over 25 years Steve Saleen and his team of octane-fueled engineers turned out some of the most desirable Mustangs the late model market had ever seen. Wrapping unparalleled performance and an inborn pedigree in aggressive styling that borrowed cues from drag cars and Bonneville champions alike, their value as collector pieces was obvious from day one. But like so many tuners, Saleen, Inc. was a small competitor in a brutally competitive niche; and even though the firm made quite a name for itself building its flagship S281 out of 'mere' Mustang GTs, most of its fans failed to realize they could roll right into the shop and order that very same package on a top dog Cobra. Much to the delight of collectors, this snafu resulted in S281 Cobras being extremely rare and extremely hard to find. But of course, as you all know, RK Motors Charlotte specializes in the extremely hard to find, and we're pleased to offer you the opportunity to own 1 of only 8 1999 S281 Cobra coupes ever produced. So, if you're looking for a genuinely enjoyable muscle car that's also a very solid investment, it simply doesn't get much better than this New Edge Mustang!
Just how special is this sinister Saleen snake? Make no mistake, seeing an S281 Cobra coupe for sale is uncommon in itself but to find one in this condition is absolutely unheard of. With only 16,669 original miles, every piece of this killer Mustang retains its showroom glow. It's stacked with almost every single piece available from Saleen for the 1999 model year. And if that's not enough, it's also a one owner car that's seen absolutely no work, aside from routine maintenance and a taller set of gears, since it rumbled out of the showroom. Here's how this Mustang's framed window sticker, which is included with the sale, breaks down.

Bathed in an even layer of Crystal White Clearcoat, and delivered to mega-dealer Jacky Jones Ford, this awesome blue oval pony has been pampered and loved since the day it was new. When the car's one and only owner happily signed the dotted red line, he decided his new S281 would be driven exclusively on nice days and enjoy indoor storage that was far removed from the throes of Mother Nature. And as a result, the body on this low mileage Mustang is a show-ready time capsule which features glossy paint, excellent fit and factory finish that's never been subjected to any work of any kind. Yes, it's very evident someone dearly LOVED this car, and it all adds up to one pristine Mustang that's clean, classy and virtually impossible to miss!
More than just a half-hearted paint-and-decal-polish, and certainly more than a simple resto-mod style engine up fit, the S281 package included a number of appearance and functional upgrades. And, as you would expect, Saleen's aggressive panels and subtle visuals fit the car extremely well both visually and aesthetically. At the front of the body, a familiar chrome horse and bright factory headlights hang over a custom, sequentially numbered Saleen fascia. Above that fascia, a square-jawed Saleen hood fronts spotless factory glass that's branded with Saleen decals, flanked by black Ford mirrors and anchored by rare Saleen C-pillar covers. Below those C-pillars, Ford's famous New Edge side panels hang small snake emblems and textured Saleen louvers above traditional Saleen decals and seamless Saleen side skirts. And behind those side skirts, a flat Saleen wing hangs a bright center high mount stop lamp above a small blue oval emblem, a small "S281" badge, Cobra-specific tail lights, a custom, "Saleen" branded fascia and large stainless exhaust tips. If ever there were a muscle car that had a scowl to match its evil demeanor, this is it!
Naturally this coupe looks great, but one of its biggest selling points is the 32-valve, dual overhead cam 'mod motor' that rumbles under its lightweight hood. Stout, solid and highly adaptable, these Teksid aluminum V8s have spent the last two decades powering everything from Mustangs and street rods to Aviators and Panoz roadsters. Not only does this modern gem crank out a solid 320 horsepower, it also features a virtually perfect OEM appearance that looks as classic as it is technical. Twist the key and the stout 4.6 liter rumbles to life, sending its bass notes down a tuned 2.5 inch exhaust system to rear-mounted tips. Goose the throttle and the big engine anxiously zings toward redline with a docile nature that creates tons of effortless power. This proven Ford powertrain sure is liquid smooth, and even with its high performance nature, the motor idles and cruises like your favorite family commuter. But, open up the throttle and it's an entirely different story - you'd better have A LOT of road ahead of you if you want to exploit the car's full performance potential! From an appearance standpoint, the great sounding mill looks exactly as it did when it's builder signed it's engine plaque at the end of Ford's Romeo, Michigan niche line. And there's that familiar feeling of first-rate workmanship, OEM-level reliability and the raucous idle Ford 'mod motors' have made famous.
Two words: Steve Saleen... The man built a reputation and career out of piloting Mustangs around tracks, so it should come as no surprise that the bottom of this Cobra was thoroughly massaged by his team of world class engineers. The firm's suspension upgrades began with a Saleen front sway bar that straightens the curves, progressed to Saleen springs, struts and shocks that fine tune the ride, and ended with Saleen chassis geometry and wheel alignment that keeps the power to the ground. Behind the car's smooth engine, a slick-shifting 5-speed manual transmission sends torque to tall, Ford installed 3.50 gears. At the corners of floor, stops are provided by a factory four wheel disc brake system that makes good use of standard ABS. Turns come courtesy of Ford's performance-tuned power steering and standard stability control system. Exhaust flows through fresh 2.5 inch pipes to factory Saleen mufflers and bright stainless tips. (The car's factory cats have been removed but ARE available to the buyer) And all this first class speed and agility rides on a set of familiar 18 inch Saleen wheels which spin sticky 255/35 front and 265/35 rear Pirelli P7000 radials around a vivid white finish.
Inside this low-slung Ford, bolstered sport seats, which feature crack-free leather hides, fit like a glove; and a leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel with convenient thumb buttons sports a "COBRA" script on its hub. The car's instrument panel is a familiar Mustang layout which features SVT's traditional white-face gauges. Below that instrument panel, Dark Charcoal trim frames a familiar Mach 460 cassette player and stand-alone CD player above a monochromatic shifter. Between the seats a slick gray console anchors traditional cup holders in front of a small amount of storage space. And naturally, all the luxuries you'd expect in a modern muscle car are ready and waiting including: cruise control, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, a power driver's seat, and a built in theft deterrent system. It's always hard to describe a car that is essentially new in every way. So I'll just sum this S281 up by saying that everything from its ice cold air conditioning to its sequential Saleen badge and color-keyed Saleen floor mats is pristine and in excellent working order.
The sale of this super clean Mustang coupe includes the framed Saleen window sticker outlined above, the car's original Ford owner's manual, the car's original Saleen owner's manual, the car's Special Vehicle Certificate, all of the car's maintenance and inspection records, a new set of floor mats that are still in the box, and an original, un-opened gift package from Ford that includes: a 35th Anniversary Ford Chronicles book, a CD case, a key chain, a decal, and a music collection.
If you're looking for the last of the SN-95 Mustangs, this Saleen street bruiser is the best of the best! It's fast, rare, documented, and still in factory new condition throughout. Add in OEM quality, and the fact that it's 1 of only 8 S281 Cobra coupes built for the 1999 model year, and you get an investment-ready piece that's sure to appreciate in the coming years. Drive it, enjoy it, race it, but don't ever forget the man who built it is all about speed. That's all you need to know!
