1961 Triumph Street Tracker/Desert Sled for sale in Charlotte, North Carolina

$2,490

International Six Days Trial successes in the late 1940s prompted Triumph to adopt the 'Trophy' name for their off-road-styled twins, at first for the 500cc TR5 and then for the 650cc TR6, introduced for 1956. The bigger Trophy retained its sporting character but became more of a roadster as time passed, ending up, in effect, as a single-carburetor T120 Bonneville. However, although the pair possessed an impeccable engine, Triumph's larger models were widely recognized as lacking in the handling department, especially when compared to rivals Norton. A lighter and smoother motorcycle, the 500cc Triumph Trophy is a bargain for the enthusiast with riding his investment in mind. Only slightly down in power from the bigger 650s, but in a lighter more nimble package, these are a blast to ride, and ride anywhere. The bike offered here takes that premise to a whole new level. A nicely presented and very well built machine, the bike was pieced together by a very capable enthusiast over a few years, some years ago. Starting with a 1961 T100 frame, an engine from 1965 bike was rebuilt from the sludge traps and crank up to valves, including new bearings?, seals, gaskets, rings, valves, etc.The bike was then treated to upgraded and custom cycle parts. Up front are Cerriani forks and triple trees straddling a 19 Dunlop wheel with a good Dunlop tire and custom metal front mudguard. Rear wheel is also a 19 item with good tire. Custom foot pegs were made and fitted with fresh rubbers, and new handlebars installed. A custom aluminum oil tank looks great and a Webco points cover and desert sled style pipes are nice finishing touches. The bike was completely rewired and uses late model switchgear. A small front headlight adds to the custom street tracker feel of the bike. The black paint on the steel tank is good, and the custom seat is excellent and really comfy for the design. The bike starts easily and runs well. It handles really well in the tracker/desert sled set up, is light and nimble and a fantastic machine through city traffic and on the twisty country lanes. Though there is no speedo, there are only a few miles on the bike since its build and is still in excellent condition throughout And a blast to ride.
