Swedish Biedermeier (c1840's) Karl Johan Birch Sofa for sale in Charlotte, North Carolina

$2,900

Swedish Biedermeier (c1830's) Karl Johan Birch Sofa
Swedish Flame Birch sofa, Biedermeier circa 1840s with scrolled arms in the Empire style. This elegant and austere sofa is one of the most successful creations to come of the Biedermeier era. Good antique condition, with a nicely aged look, and warm aged patina. There are dings/imperfections here and there, and repairs to the rear feet.
Nothing too noticeable, and does not distract from its elegant appearance.
The photos show the style, age, quality and condition. The sofa was acquired during a trip to Paris in 2001 from the Galerie Canavese (/en.html).
There are no repairs needed. It is a fully functional sofa. The original upholstery was a very worn tapestry fabric and it was reupholstered in the Stroheim & Roman green velvet in 2003. No rips, tears, or stains in the fabric. The cushions contain the original horsehair batting. The only visible repairs are to the rear feet, which were done years before we purchased it.
The piece has been used very little. It mainly on display our French styled library and generally only sat in on special occasions. It is solid and sturdy and comes from a non-smoking and pet free home. It is being sold because we are moving into a smaller home and no longer have the right spot for it.
Upon request additional images can be emailed to interested buyers.
The asking price is $2,900 or best offer.

MORE ON THE BIEDERMEIER STYLE:
The Biedermeier style pertains to a style of interior decoration appearing in Germany and Austria in the first half of the 19th century. The name (composed from the common German family names of bieder, simplet, and meier) comes from a fictitious character, created by two German satirists in the late 1840s. The Biedermeier style in furniture was known for its clean lines, proportion, utility and geometry of form, which stood out as a rejection of the extravagance and ornament of the previous Empire Style. The furniture was often crafted from locally available fruit woods such as cherry and pear, as well as ash and oak. These woods provide much of the aesthetic that has become known as Biedermeier.
The curved line was always a feature of table legs and chair backs but became more pronounced with the increasing use of ornamental motifs. Typical of the Biedermeier style are padded divans, brightly colored tapestries and crystal, carpets and trinkets. The wood used was generally lighter and inexpensive woods such as maples, silver or tiger birch and cherry.
