This very subtle resto-mod 1966 Mustang coupe had the big money spent where it matters, and the result is a handsome, sophisticated pony that can run with some seriously fast hardware. Built to keep, not to sell (yet here it is), it is done the way we all would build our own dream cars: with care and the best of everything. Until you saw them rendered in this cars beautiful Silversmoke Gray, you probably didnt realize how crisp and angular an early Mustang really was. Just look at it in profile and dig the way the side scoop seems to be carving itself into the Mustangs flanks, and the way the fender flares are so crisply rendered. Of course, you dont get this simply by picking the right color, the bodywork has to be right, and this one has a huge amount of time and money invested to make it look this good. Panel gaps are even, those side scoops are from the Shelby parts bin, and the contrasting hood scoop and tail panel are road-race-inspired additions that look good without being too flashy. All the chrome has been brightly re-plated, and those cool headlights are actually HID units that light up the world at night like flamethrowers. Freshly restored, the black Pony interior looks ready for the show field, but like the bodywork, offers a few upgrades that maybe you didnt notice right away. Seats, door panels, dash pad, and carpeting is all restoration-grade and correct, but check out that lovely laminated wood steering wheel that probably cost a fortune. The original gauges are nicely restored, but look closely and youll see a big tachometer at the base of the steering column where its easy to read but not immediately apparent. Matching auxiliary gauges have been fitted in the usual location, and without a center console, this one can now accommodate a center armrest with built-in cupholders, which is always nice in a vintage automobile. A newer AM/FM/cassette head unit is in the dash, but the glove box holds a brand new CD setup with remote control, too. In the trunk, theres fresh carpeting and a relocated battery to improve weight distribution. Big modifications under the skin make this coupe more a formidable performer. The engine is a proper 289, but offers goodies like and Edelbrock intake and carburetor, a high-lift cam, ported 302 heads, all adding up to 310 horsepower. A big aluminum radiator with electric fan keeps it cool, and the custom Flowmaster exhaust system sounds spectacular. The original 3-speed manual transmission feeds a 9-inch rear full of 3.55 gears, which are a nice compromise between acceleration and cruising. And no resto-mod is complete without a disc brake at each corner and a set of modern shoes-in this cars case theyre 17-inch Torque Thrusts wearing 235/45/17 performance radials.
