Some cars are interesting all by themselves, and others are interesting for the stories they can tell, but the very best cars offer both. This 1968 Ford Galaxie XL fastback is, by itself, a very cool car, but it also brings a wealth of stories with it that will delight historians. Always a dry, South Carolina car, this Galaxie has never needed any metal surgery, and when the time came to refresh the finish, little more than a few hours of block sanding were required. Of course, when you change colors (this one was originally code Y Medium Gold Metallic), its critical to properly prep and disassemble the car to get complete coverage, and as you can see from the photos, this one was done right. Theres no trace of the original finish anywhere, and the big fastback wears that lustrous coat of black paint like a linebacker in a tuxedo. The front-end was completely redesigned in 1968, adding the hidden headlights, dramatically changing the looks of the car. Those gorgeous sculpted fenders that kick up behind the doors give the car an elegant sophistication that only gets better the more you look at it. The finish is very good, and combined with a new black vinyl top, the car definitely has presence. The black vinyl bench seat interior offers accommodations for six, which is what full-sized cars were all about. New seat covers, carpets, dash pad and a fresh headliner make it look and feel like a new car inside, and everything works as it should. When we say everything, we mean everything - the gauges, radio, dome lights, even the clock - they all work just as well as when this car rolled off the factory floor. The instrument panel is a cool pod ahead of the driver with the gauges hidden behind a textured fascia. Auxiliary controls are integrated into a band of burled walnut that runs from end to end, and matches the insert on the steering wheel. An AM/FM stereo radio is a very rare accessory for 1968, and one look in the trunk will convince you that this has never been a rusty car-its spotless! Power comes from the original Y code 390, which makes big torque and moves the fastback with effortless ease. Both the engine and transmission were rebuilt less than 500 miles ago, and it runs like a new car with a smooth idle and a great V8 burble from the twin tailpipes. While they had it apart, they took the time to detail the engine bay, including fresh Ford Blue paint on the engine itself, correct radiator hoses and clamps, reproduction decals, and nicely detailed accessories. Underneath, it is unbelievably clean, with solid floors and a leak-free 2.75-geared 9-inch rear. Documentation includes the original warranty card, manuals, brochures, and even a matchbook that was used when the original buyer and sales manager hashed out the deal over cigars. Its tough to find something that strikes the perfect balance of elegant and aggressive at the same time. This Galaxie is a very high-quality and very unusual piece of luxury muscle. Call us today to hear all the stories it has to tell!
