With prices of 442s rocketing out of sight, the best way to get into an Olds convertible is with the always-wonderful Cutlass Supreme. While not quite a match for the 442 in terms of straight-line speed, this 1970 Cutlass Supreme convertible offers V8 power, a ton of luxury options, and the same handsome good looks as its big brother, all at a price thats a fraction of the 442s. The recipient of a frame-on restoration about two years ago, this Cutlass Supreme ragtop certainly looks the part of a muscle car, thanks to blue stripes that emulate the 442s look. It seems that this was a straight, clean southern car when work started, so rust was minimal, with good panel fit throughout, a hallmark of Oldsmobiles from this era. The overall look is crisp and clean, with a minimum of ornamentation that would otherwise distract you from the handsome silhouette, particularly the kick-up behind the doors. Much of the chrome was refreshed at the same time, with bright bumpers and a very nicely preserved egg crate grille from a 1972 model. Big props to the restorer for not building a 442 replica and retaining all the Cutlass Supremes identifiers, including the ornate CS badges on the flanks. Those blue stripes work extremely well with the blue vinyl bucket seat interior, somewhat of a rarity among Cutlass Supreme models. The upholstery was replaced during the restoration and presents in very good condition with no damage on any of the soft parts. The instrument panel features brushed stainless faces on the gauges, which appear to be in original condition, and the burled walnut appliques on the dash and door panels are still vivid and well detailed. A/C is part of the package, which should be expected with Oldsmobiles luxury image, and upgrades like the Grant GT steering wheel and an AM/FM/cassette stereo make it a pleasure to cruise. A power convertible top folds quickly into the well for near-instant open-air motoring. Oldsmobiles rugged Rocket 350 lives under the hood, and although it shares a displacement with the venerable Chevy small block, the two share virtually zero components. The Olds has a distinctive sound and makes great torque, making this car feel plenty quick on the streets. These engines are also famous for their durability, with the extra nickel in the block making them virtually indestructible. The engine bay shows signs of recent maintenance, including fresh Oldsmobile Gold on the block and new hoses throughout. A TH350 3-speed automatic shifts crisply, and the chassis shows a lot of new components, ranging from a fresh exhaust system to a new gas tank hanging out back. Color-matched Olds Rally wheels wear recent whitewall radials, which dont do much for the performance image but they do ride and handle very well.
