Roman Rod Formed Glass Vase Amulet

CULTURE / REGION OF ORIGIN: Roman Syria or Palestine
DATE: Mid-4th to Early 5th Century CE
DIMENSIONS:  2.5 cm tall (1.0 in.)
DESCRIPTION: Intact. A miniature one-handled vase meant to serve as an amulet. Made from translucent to opaque green glass with two trails of opaque brown to amber glass, appearing almost black, in high relief around the center of the body, connected by an additional zig-zag trail of the same color, thus creating a neatly defined latticework effect. Another trail of brown to amber glass continues upward to the rim, forming a delicate loop handle. The object rests on a wide pad ad base, while the outward turned rim is of slightly greater width. An uncommon and well preserved type.
PROVENANCE: In an East Coast U.S. East Coast private collection until 2004.
COMPARISONS: E. Marianne Stern, Roman, Byzantine, and Early Medieval Glass, 10 BCE - 700 CE, Ernesto Wolf Collection, Osfildern-Ruit, 2001, Catalogue Numbers 209 and 210 for near identical examples. Also, Maud Spaer, Ed., Ancient Glass in the Israel Museum, Beads and Other Small Objects, pages 170-173 for a discussion of the type and several excavated examples, Plate 16, #352 for a very similar example.
